About My Brushes

How is the MDBrush different from other toothbrushes?
The MDBrush, designed by a dental hygienist and dentist, has several patented features to ensure you not only clean your teeth effectively, but also your sulcus. It is designed exclusively for the dentist-preferred  “Bass” brushing technique, which has been proven to be the most effective way to prevent gum disease.
Who designed the MDBrush?
MDBrush is not your typical oral care company. Founded by a dentist and hygienist who have worked on teeth and gums every day for more than 40 years collectively, Mike Smith, DDS, and Michael Davidson, RDH, BSDH, created MDBrush with the goal of providing the general public a superior toothbrush that proactively addresses the most common user errors and thereby prevents the onset of gum disease…and, of course, cleans your mouth. Your whole mouth.
What is MDBrush?
MDBrush is available with or without a club membership. We make sure you get the best toothbrush delivered right to your door exactly when you’re supposed to throw out your old toothbrush and crack open a  new stick.
Will I have to change the way I brush my teeth using the MDBrush?
If you brush up and down or in circles you need to change the way you currently brush no matter which toothbrush you use. The dentist-preferred “Bass” brushing technique involves making contact with your gum line at a 45° angle for the bristles to clean underneath  the gums- (AKA the sulcus), thus sweeping out the bacteria that trigger gum disease. The MDBrush was designed specifically to make sure you get the  “Bass” technique right, and the patented W-cut bristles clean the gums as well as the teeth at the same time.
When will I receive my MDBrushes?
MDBrushes are shipped on the 1st or 15th of every month, depending on when you place your order.  If you choose to join the MD Brush Club, you’ll automatically receive replacement brushes every 3 months.

MD Brush and Your Mouth

Why were we taught to brush in circles and up and down in grade school?
This answer is complicated and will vary depending upon whom you ask, but the general consensus is that it is easier for kids to grasp concepts of circles and up and down than a 45 degree angle. Trying to teach a more complicated technique may result in frustration, leading to a total absence of brushing. So, some brushing, even if it is not precise, is still better than not brushing at all. The problem is that children are rarely corrected and taught dentist-preferred Bass brushing technique as they grow older.
Why did my dentist/ hygienist tell me to brush up and down or in circles if that's not an effective way to remove bacteria from my gum line?
A dentist or hygienist may advise you to brush up and down or in circles if he/she has noticed gum recession or toothbrush abrasion, usually caused from scrubbing teeth too hard in a horizontal fashion and brushing too many teeth, 2 to 5, per stroke. These up/down/circle techniques will stop the abrasion and recession from getting worse, but at the cost of ignoring the sulcus. Again, if you brush 45 degrees into the gum line and do not power stroke your teeth, you will not get recession. Also, we do not advocate using hard, or even medium bristles in the mouth. Buy soft or extra soft. The only thing hard bristles are good for is detailing your car. Just remember: 45 degrees at 45 seconds, going over 1 to 2 teeth at a time, with light pressure.
What's the difference between periodontitis and gingivitis?
To break it down to its simplest form, Gingivitis is just a simple inflammation of the gums due to an over growth of bacteria. Periodontal Disease is the big brother of gingivitis. The gums have been inflamed for too long via gingivitis, and now the sulcus, which is normally 2-3mm deep begins to deepen which allows even more bacteria to accumulate. This is where teeth can get loose. The gums create a seal around the teeth. As long as that seal is healthy and tight – you get to keep your teeth.
What is Periodonitis?
Periodontal Disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gum, caused by a bacterial infection occurring just below the gum line. The longer gum tissues stay in contact with toxic bacterial waste, the more inflamed they will become. Proper brushing will remove this bacteria before inflammation starts – which is a good thing. The body reacts to bacterial toxins by triggering an inflammatory reaction, ramping up activity of white blood cells, cytokines, neutrophils, inflammatory cell mediators and blood flow, all of which help to fight and flush out the bacteria. However, if this inflammatory response occurs over a long period of time, the tissues can become so compromised that they begin to break down, which can eventually lead to bone and tooth loss.
How do I know if bacteria have already entered my bloodstream, putting me at risk for other systemic diseases like heart disease or erectile dysfunction?
You won’t and neither will we, unless you want to take an expensive blood test. The rule is that if you see blood in your mouth, then bacteria is entering your blood stream. But, that does not mean to stop brushing areas that bleed. On the contrary, areas that typically bleed do so because of bacterial inflammation. Removal of the bacteria, via brushing, removes the cause of inflammation so that eventually the gums will stop bleeding. So, when you see blood, it’s actually better to brush and floss more frequently. The bleeding should stop in a few days when the gums calm down. The MDBrush was made to clean the sulcus, the small pocket just below the gum line, which is the primary area where bacteria build up, triggering inflamed, bleeding gums.
What’s the difference between flossing and using the MDBrush?
Flossing is designed to remove large pieces of organic matter, i.e. food, stuck between your teeth. When little bits of food like this aren’t removed daily, they can lead to bacteria build-up in your gums, which causes gum disease but watch out, one study showed that while flossing is great at removing trapped food, it actually isn’t the most effective way to sweep out trapped bacteria within your gum line. That’s where the MDBrush comes in, because it targets the sulcus, the little pocket just below the gum line, where bacteria likes to make a home for itself. On the flip side, the MDBrush won’t sweep out that popcorn kernel crammed between your molars. Bottom line: You need to use both daily.
If I use the MD Brush, do I still need to floss?
Yes
How many times do I need to brush with MDBrush to see results?
If you don’t have gum disease, you’ll notice that your teeth will have never felt so clean and your breath so fresh after just one use of the MDBrush. If you have gingivitis, you should notice significant improvement of symptoms within 3 days.
How often should I change my toothbrush?
We, as well as the American Dental Association (ADA), recommend changing your toothbrush every 3 months.
Now that I know that moving my toothbrush up and down and around in circles is not as effective, what type of strokes should I use?
The dentist preferred Bass brushing technique requires short side-to-side strokes, going over 1 to 2 teeth at a time and using light to medium pressure. Do not scrub your teeth in long powerful strokes over 2 to 5 teeth at a time. This can lead to gum recession, root exposure, sensitivity and possibly grooves in your teeth. Many of us let our arm do the brushing and not our brain. Take a minute to think about getting the bristles to go just under the gum line to sweep out the bacteria.
